Scripture For Today
Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. 2 Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. - Colossians 3:1-2 NIV
Paul writes these words to believers who have been united with Christ, reminding them that their true life is now “hidden with Christ in God.” Because that is true, the focus of their minds is meant to change. Setting your mind on things above does not mean ignoring everyday responsibilities or pretending earthly realities do not exist.
It means seeing those realities in light of heaven by letting God’s presence, purposes, and values become the lens through which you think, decide, and live.
“Things above” are the realities of God’s kingdom: His rule, His glory, His character, His promises, and the hope of being with Christ. When the mind turns there, it begins to loosen its grip on the temporary things of this world: status, possessions, constant comparison, and the need to control every outcome. This shift does not make you less engaged with life.
On the contrary, it makes you more grounded. You remember that your identity is in Christ, your future is secure, and your deepest treasure is not something you can lose. Paul’s call also speaks to what fills your inner world. If your thoughts are continually occupied with fear, envy, resentment, or the chase for more, anxiety and restlessness follow.
As you intentionally set your mind on what is above, such as God’s faithfulness, Christ’s love, the Spirit’s work, and the truth of Scripture, the peace and clarity in your heart begin to grow. The circumstances may not change immediately, but the atmosphere inside your heart does.
This verse is not about escaping reality; it is about aligning with a greater reality. Earthly things, including work, relationships, needs, and responsibilities, still matter, but they are no longer ultimate. When Christ is seen as your life, you can engage those things with open hands. Success does not define you, failure does not destroy you, and shifting seasons do not shake your foundation the way they once did.
If you find your mind constantly pulled downward by worry, distraction, or disappointment, Colossians 3:1-2 is an invitation. You are not powerless over your focus. With God’s help, you can turn your thoughts toward Him, again and again, and let what is above reshape how you experience what is below.
Three Practical Ways To Walk Out This Word Daily
1. Start Your Day By Looking Up
Begin your day with a few moments focused on God—through Scripture, prayer, or simple gratitude. Naming who He is before you face everything else helps your mind start on “things above,” not on your to-do list or worries.
2. Interrupt Earthly Spirals With Heavenly Truth
When your thoughts start spiraling around fear, comparison, or frustration, pause and bring in one truth from God’s Word—about His care, His sovereignty, or His love. Let that truth interrupt the spiral and gently pull your focus upward.
3. Let Eternal Values Shape Your Daily Decisions
Before making a choice, ask, “What matters most to God in this situation: love, integrity, humility, generosity?” Let that answer guide you. Small decisions made with eternal values in mind train your mind to stay set on things above.
Closing Empowerment
“Set your minds on things above” is not a call to ignore life; it is a call to live it from a higher place. As you turn your thoughts toward God’s reality and Christ’s reign, you gain strength to face earthly things without being ruled by them. Today, you can choose, thought by thought, to lift your eyes and let heaven’s perspective steady your heart.
