“Say to Daughter Zion, ‘See, your king comes to you, gentle and riding on a donkey, and on a colt, the foal of a donkey.’ ” - Matthew 21:5 NIV
Jesus was the Word made flesh. His very existence was the word of the Lord being manifest in the earth. We see this in John 1:14:
The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth. - John 1:14 NIV
His life becoming the sacrifice to reconcile us back to our Father was written in scripture and planned by God from the beginning of the world. This part of the scripture, when we see a colt being retrieved for Him to come into Jerusalem was yet another sign of Jesus being the Word. His very life testified to the evidence that scripture was sound and true.
Coming into the city riding in on a donkey was not mere performance. It was intentional and strategic so that the people would know that they were witnessing the scriptural Son of David, the Messiah, coming into the city.
Furthermore, the colt being a foal is very specific. This colt, a male donkey, wasn't just a male donkey up to 4 years old. All colts can be up to four years old. But the male donkey being a foal meant that the male donkey was less than 12 months old. The fact that one was available and ready to be ridden by Jesus was evidence that all the elements of the word were already ready for the Word to come forth, as noted in the Old Testament.
Matthew 21:5 references both The phrase "Say to the daughter of Zion" directly echoes Isaiah 62:11, while the description of the humble king coming on a donkey is from Zechariah 9:9.
The Lord has made proclamation to the ends of the earth: “Say to Daughter Zion, ‘See, your Savior comes! See, his reward is with him, and his recompense accompanies him.’” - Isaiah 62:11 NIV
Rejoice greatly, Daughter Zion! Shout, Daughter Jerusalem! See, your king comes to you, righteous and victorious, lowly and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey. - Zachariah 9:9 NIV
Your life is sending me. Everything that God has called you has already been written in the word. Your life is not a surprise to God. What you have walked through is not something that took God by surprise. From the foundations of the earth, God has known your name.
God knows the plans that He has for your life. The elements needed are right where you are. All that is needed to see the manifested word of God over your life is around you right now. The path is already set and the victory is already won.
Three Practical Ways To Walk Out This Word Daily
1. Trust That God Has Already Gone Before You
Walk in Confidence, Not Uncertainty
Just as the colt was already prepared for Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem, the provision for your calling and next steps is already in place. God is not making it up as He goes. Begin your day in confidence, declaring that your steps are ordered by the Lord. Remind yourself that what you need to fulfill your purpose is already available. Ask God to open your eyes to what He has placed around you and within you.
2. Live with Intentional Alignment
Let Your Life Fulfill the Word of God
Jesus didn’t move randomly. Every action was intentional and fulfilled prophecy. As His followers, we too should live with purpose. Seek to align your words, choices, and lifestyle with the truth of scripture. When you act in love, serve in humility, and walk in obedience, your life becomes a testimony of God's Word made real. Let your daily actions reflect your belief that you are part of a divine plan.
3. Stay Humble in Every Victory
Carry Power with Gentleness
Jesus entered the city as a victorious King, but He did so riding on a young donkey. This image teaches us that spiritual power does not require performance or pride. As you walk in the promises of God, stay low in spirit. Let humility mark your leadership, relationships, and decisions. God honors those who carry His authority with gentleness and reverence.
Walking out this scripture means understanding that your life is part of a much bigger story. God has written the plan, and He is faithful to fulfill every word He has spoken concerning you. Trust His timing, follow His leading, and remain anchored in His Word.
