“Be on guard! Be alert! You do not know when that time will come.” – Mark 13:33 (NIV)
In this brief but powerful command, Jesus reminds us of a sobering truth: the exact timing of His return is unknown. This isn’t meant to stir fear, but to ignite a sense of urgency and commitment in how we live our daily lives. Mark 13:33 is a call to stay spiritually awake: vigilant, prayerful, and faithful. Trusting in God and remaining steadfast in our faith is what empowers us to live prepared lives, ready for whatever may come.
Trusting God Keeps Us Grounded and Prepared
Trust is the foundation of vigilance. When we trust God deeply, we learn to rely on His Word and His timing. Even when it’s uncertain. Proverbs 3:5-6 reminds us, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.” Trust keeps us from anxiety and panic when the world seems unstable. It allows us to live with calm confidence, knowing our future is in God’s hands—even if we don’t know the day or the hour.
Just like a soldier remains on duty with his gear in place, we are called to live spiritually ready, clothed in faith and wisdom. We may not know when the Lord will return, but when we trust Him, we’ll be found faithfully serving, not sleeping.
Prayer is the Fuel for Vigilance
1 Thessalonians 5:17 simply tells us, “Pray continually.” This isn’t a call to recite words all day long, but to live in constant communion with God, our hearts always turned toward Him. Prayer is how we remain alert in the Spirit. It is how we resist temptation, discern truth, and grow in intimacy with the Father.
Jesus modeled this during His time on earth. In the Garden of Gethsemane, He told His disciples, “Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak” (Matthew 26:41). To pray is to remain watchful. It sharpens our senses and anchors us in God’s presence, helping us to recognize and resist distractions, deception, and spiritual apathy.
Living for God's Glory Keeps Our Focus Eternal
When we live to glorify God, we stop getting lost in the temporary things of this world. Colossians 3:2 says, “Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.” Our actions, words, and choices begin to reflect eternity. We begin to live as citizens of heaven rather than slaves to this world.
Romans 12:1 also reminds us that our very lives are an act of worship: “Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship.” A life lived for God’s glory is a life on high alert. It refuses to be lulled into spiritual laziness or compromise.
The Enemy Is Always on the Prowl
We are reminded in 1 Peter 5:8, “Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.” Ignoring the call of Mark 13:33—failing to be on guard—makes us vulnerable to the enemy’s attacks. The devil seeks to distract, divide, and destroy. He capitalizes on spiritual sleepiness.
But James 4:7 gives us the strategy: “Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” When we stay submitted to God, filled with His Word, and guided by the Spirit, we will not be caught unaware. We become dangerous to darkness, living light in a world that needs hope.
