Rising with Praise and Trusting in God’s Protection
Today’s Scripture:
“But I will sing of your strength, in the morning I will sing of your love. For you are my fortress, my refuge in times of trouble.” — Psalm 59:16 (NIV)
The beginning of each day is an opportunity. As the sun rises and the world awakens, we are given the chance to set the tone for what is to come. Psalm 59:16 paints a beautiful picture of how we are invited to do just that. By singing of God’s strength and His love each morning, we declare our dependence on Him. We acknowledge that it is not our efforts that sustain us, but the unwavering presence of our God who watches over us, protects us, and fills us with His peace.
David wrote these words while being pursued by enemies. He was under attack and surrounded by danger. Yet, instead of focusing on the chaos, he chose to praise. He decided that his first words each morning would not be complaints or cries of fear, but songs of worship. He understood that praise is not dependent on our circumstances. It is a choice that refocuses our heart and lifts our eyes to the One who is greater than every challenge.
Scripture reminds us that the name of the Lord is a strong tower. Proverbs 18:10 says, “The name of the Lord is a fortified tower. The righteous run to it and are safe.” God’s presence is not just comforting. It is powerful. It is secure. It is a place we can run to when life feels overwhelming. And within that refuge, we find peace that guards our hearts and minds.
Psalm 91:1 says, “Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.” To dwell in God’s shelter is to intentionally position ourselves under His covering. We do this through prayer, worship, and choosing to trust Him with every detail of our lives. When we start our mornings by singing of His love, we are entering that shelter. We are choosing to let God lead and protect us throughout the day.
The morning is a sacred time. Lamentations 3:22-23 tells us that God’s mercies are new every morning. Each day is a fresh opportunity to receive His grace and to walk in His strength. When we rise with praise on our lips, we are aligning ourselves with Heaven’s rhythm. We are recognizing that it is God who keeps us, provides for us, and surrounds us with steadfast love.
When we declare God as our fortress, we are placing our confidence in Him rather than in our circumstances or abilities. Psalm 27:1 says, “The Lord is my light and my salvation. Whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life. Of whom shall I be afraid?” No matter what the day may hold, we can walk into it with courage and peace when we begin with worship and remembrance of who God is.
It is in the quiet moments of the morning that we are most able to hear from God. Before the demands of the day come rushing in, we can sit at His feet, listen for His voice, and receive the strength we need. Isaiah 40:31 reminds us, “But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles. They will run and not grow weary. They will walk and not be faint.” This renewal begins as we lift our eyes to Him and praise His name.
Living this way does not mean we will avoid trials. But it does mean we will walk through them differently. When God is our refuge and fortress, fear does not have the final say. We can carry a song of praise in our hearts, even in the midst of difficulty, because we know who holds our future.
