Scripture For Today
“Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD and shun evil.” - Proverbs 3:7 NIV
Today’s cornerstone scripture is a reminder that wisdom begins with humility. It is easy to trust in our own perspective, our own understanding, and our own strength. Especially when we feel certain, have experience, and are convinced that we know what is best.
But Proverbs 3:7 warns against becoming so confident in our own understanding that we stop seeking God. We are also reminded of this in preceding verses:
5 Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. 6 In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. - Proverbs 3:5-6 KJV
The understanding we operate in today could be the limitation that keeps us from growing in the fruit of our faith tomorrow. Trusting in the Lord with all our hearts is a deep reflection of wisdom and patience. When you decide to trust in the Lord and ask Him the way you should go, you are consciously stepping into faith that surpasses limitations.
While being “wise in your own eyes” does not mean you should doubt every decision, it does mean that sometimes the road ahead has twists, turns, and obstacles that you may not be aware of in the moment. Every detail, every motive, and every pit stop may not be known to you, but it is known by God.
Shunning evil is also practical. It means not only recognizing what is wrong, but choosing distance from it. Some temptations become harder to resist the closer you remain to them. Wisdom may require a boundary, a different environment, a difficult conversation, or a decision to walk away from something that continues pulling you in the wrong direction.
God is not trying to make your life smaller by asking you to avoid what is harmful. His wisdom protects what is good in you and helps preserve the peace, integrity, and direction He is building in your life. Let go. You do not need to know everything. You need only know how to pause and seek His face as you move forward.
Three Practical Ways To Walk Out This Word
1: Ask God To Challenge Your Assumptions
Bring one decision, opinion, or situation before God and pray, “Lord, show me if I am seeing this clearly.” Be willing to receive an answer that challenges what you originally wanted or expected.
2: Seek Wisdom Before Acting
Before making an important choice, slow down long enough to pray, reflect on Scripture, and seek wise counsel if needed. Confidence is not the same thing as wisdom. Give God room to redirect you.
3: Create Distance From What Pulls You Away From God
Identify one influence, habit, environment, or temptation that repeatedly leads you away from peace, integrity, or obedience. Decide on one practical boundary that makes it easier to choose what is right.
Closing Encouragement
You do not have to carry the pressure of always knowing what is best. God sees what you cannot see and understands what you do not yet know. When you remain humble, teachable, and willing to follow His direction, you make room for a wisdom greater than your own.
