Seeing What’s Right in Front of You
John 9:37-38 (NIV): “Jesus said, ‘You have now seen him; in fact, he is the one speaking with you.’ Then the man said, ‘Lord, I believe,’ and he worshiped him.”
In John 9, Jesus heals a man who was blind from birth. This man had lived his entire life in darkness, but one encounter with Jesus changed everything. Even more powerful than the restoration of his physical sight was the opening of his spiritual eyes—allowing him to recognize the Savior standing right before him.
How often do we pray for answers, unaware that God has already placed them in front of us? The ability to see what we are looking for is key to experiencing the fullness of God’s goodness. His ways are higher than ours, and His thoughts far beyond our understanding (Isaiah 55:8-9). When we pray for God to reveal great and mighty things, He opens our eyes to see from His perspective—so we don’t miss the blessings that are already within reach.
Seeing What’s Right in Front of You
The man who had been blind did not initially recognize Jesus as the Messiah. He had received physical sight, but it wasn’t until Jesus revealed Himself that the man truly saw. His story mirrors many of our own—where we search for answers, yet struggle to recognize when God has already provided them.
Luke 24:31 tells the story of the disciples on the road to Emmaus: “Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him, and he disappeared from their sight.” Like the blind man, they didn’t realize that Jesus Himself was walking with them. It wasn’t until their spiritual eyes were opened that they saw the truth.
God often answers our prayers in ways we don’t expect. That’s why we must ask Him to reveal His will and align our vision with His, so we don’t overlook what He’s already given us.
God’s Ways Are Not Our Ways
One reason we struggle to recognize God’s answers is because they don’t always come in the form we expect. Isaiah 55:8-9 (NIV) reminds us:
“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the Lord. “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.”
We might be looking for provision in one way, but God provides in another. We might expect healing in a specific manner, but God heals in a way that deepens our faith. We might seek direction through signs, but God speaks through stillness (1 Kings 19:12).
When we trust God’s higher ways, we can release our limited expectations and receive what He has already prepared for us.
Praying for Greater Vision
If we want to see what God is doing, we must ask Him for spiritual sight. Jeremiah 33:3 says:
“Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know.”
This is an invitation to go deeper—to seek God not just for what we want, but for what He wants to reveal. The more we pray for understanding, the more we will recognize His hand at work in our lives.
Paul echoed this in Ephesians 1:18, praying: “I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people.”
When our hearts are enlightened, we begin to see beyond the natural and into the supernatural. We discern opportunities, relationships, and blessings that were hidden in plain sight.
Three Practical Ways to Walk This Out Daily
Pray for God to Open Your Eyes
Ask God daily to reveal what you cannot see on your own.
Meditate on Jeremiah 33:3 and invite Him to show you His perspective.
Surrender Your Expectations
Trust that God’s ways are higher than yours.
When answers don’t come as expected, pause and ask, “Lord, how are You moving in this situation?”
Be Still and Listen
Sometimes, the reason we don’t see God’s answers is because we’re too distracted.
Take time daily to sit in quiet and allow the Holy Spirit to speak. (Psalm 46:10 – “Be still, and know that I am God.”)
Conclusion
Jesus was standing right in front of the blind man, just as He stands before us today. The question is: Can we see Him?
The key to experiencing the goodness of God isn’t just seeking Him—it’s being ready to recognize Him when He reveals Himself. When we pray for clarity, surrender our expectations, and trust His higher ways, we begin to see from His perspective—and that changes everything.
