Scripture For Today
“Since then, you have been raised with Christ; set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.” - Colossians 3:1–2 NIV
Paul begins with your identity before he speaks about your focus: if you belong to Christ, you have been raised with Him. Your life is no longer defined only by what is temporary, visible, stressful, or uncertain. It is “hidden with Christ in God,” and Christ Himself is your life.
This is not a call to ignore your earthly responsibilities, your relationships, your work, or the real needs around you. It is a call to see all of them from a higher perspective. You still pay bills, care for people, make decisions, grieve losses, and do your work, but you do not have to let temporary pressures become the ultimate ruler of your heart.
Set Your Heart and Mind
To set your heart on things above is to direct your deepest desires toward Christ: His presence, His kingdom, His character, and what He values. To set your mind on things above is to deliberately return your thoughts to what is eternally true when anxiety, comparison, fear, temptation, or distraction tries to take over.
“Things above” are not merely thoughts about leaving earth someday. They are the realities of Christ’s reign, God’s truth, eternal hope, holy character, love, mercy, justice, and faithful obedience. Because Christ is seated at God’s right hand, He reigns with authority; your life is held by Someone greater than the circumstances that are trying to overwhelm you.
When your mind is fixed only on earthly things, it can become trapped by what is urgent: deadlines, finances, approval, possessions, conflict, status, or fear of the future. These concerns can be real, but they are not meant to carry the weight of your identity or hope. God gently invites you to lift your eyes and remember what lasts.
A Heavenly Focus Changes Today
A mind that is set on Christ does not make you less useful in the world; it makes you more faithful within it. It changes how you respond:
You can choose integrity over a shortcut because God’s approval matters more than temporary gain.
You can forgive because Christ’s mercy has reached you.
You can serve without needing recognition because your life is secure in God.
You can face uncertainty without panic because Christ is still reigning.
You can endure hardship without despair because this present moment is not the final chapter.
This is a daily practice, not a one-time decision. Your thoughts will drift, and worldly pressures will compete for your attention. When they do, do not condemn yourself. Simply turn again toward Jesus. He is present, He is victorious, and He is able to steady your heart.
Three Practical Ways To Walk Out This Word
1: Begin With What Is True
Before taking in messages, news, or social media, read these verses slowly. Tell yourself: “I belong to Christ. My life is held in His hands and He is the way, the truth, and the life.” Let this truth become the first voice shaping your perspective.
2: Reframe One Earthly Concern
Name one concern occupying your thoughts today: a relationship, a bill, a decision, a health issue, a conflict, or the future. Pray, “Lord, show me how to see this from Your perspective.” Then ask for the next wise step while leaving the final outcome with Him.
3: Choose One Eternal Investment
Do one thing today that reflects what lasts: pray for someone, forgive, speak truth with kindness, serve quietly, give generously, resist temptation, spend time in Scripture, or encourage a discouraged person. Let your heavenly focus take practical form on earth.
Closing Encouragement
You do not have to carry the world on your shoulders. Christ is seated in victory, and your life is secure in Him. When your mind is crowded and your heart feels pulled in many directions, lift your eyes again. Set your heart on Jesus, set your mind on what lasts, and trust Him to guide you through every earthly responsibility with peace, wisdom, and hope.
