Scripture For Today
“For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we will certainly also be united with him in a resurrection like his.” - Romans 6:5 NIV
Romans 6:5 is a declaration of hope and unity for believers who love and follow Jesus. Through our faith in Jesus Christ, we are co-heirs, partaking in the glory of God. His death marks the end of the chains of sin and darkness that plagued the world. His resurrection opens the way into a new life marked by freedom, hope, and a future beyond death.
Paul uses baptism to demonstrate the power of this union once we accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior. Submersion into the water represents being buried with Christ; rising from it points to being born again and raised from the old life.
The public baptism is a declaration that we as believers have received Jesus Christ as our Lord. While it doesn’t mark the end of pain, suffering, and the sin that so easily beset us, it does mark the beginning of a lifelong journey of walking with God by faith and through the power of Christ.
United With Christ
The moment you receive Jesus, your life is joined to His saving work. His death was the price paid for our sins and gives us the grace to repent of those sins and step into everlasting life with Him.
This verse holds both a present and future promise:
Presently: Christ gives you a new spiritual life. You can turn from sin, receive forgiveness, renew your mind, and walk in a new direction through the power of the Holy Spirit.
Ultimately: Jesus’ physical resurrection guarantees the future resurrection of those who belong to Him. Death is real, but it is not final. Those united with Christ have the certain hope of being raised to life with Him.
Paul’s word “certainly” matters. Your hope does not rest on your ability to hold everything together or on how perfectly you perform. It rests on Jesus, who died once for sin, rose from the dead, and cannot die again. He has the keys to life and death in His hands.
Living From New Life
Past failures, destructive habits, painful shame, or words that others have spoken over you are not your destiny. They are not the fullness of your identity and are washed away in Jesus. Romans 6:5 is a reminder that these things do not have the final say over you. Your life is made new in Jesus Christ.
Living in this new life looks like daily choices:
Bringing temptation into God’s light rather than hiding it.
Replacing lies with the truth of God’s Word.
Taking responsibility when you fail and receiving forgiveness.
Seeking prayer, accountability, counseling, or practical support when a struggle is persistent.
Choosing obedience one decision at a time, trusting that God is continuing His work in you.
This is not self-powered moral improvement. It is a response to the reality that the Holy Spirit is at work within you.
Three Practical Ways To Walk Out This Word
1: Identify The Old Pattern
Ask God to reveal one old pattern that no longer belongs in your new life in Christ, such as bitterness, dishonesty, fear, resentment, lust, self-condemnation, people-pleasing, or destructive speech. Name it honestly without shame, then pray: “I surrender this to you, Lord. Help me to live by faith in the grace you’ve given me .”
2: Practice A Resurrection Choice
When you face a temptation or familiar negative pattern today, pause and choose one response that reflects new life: tell the truth, walk away, ask for help, forgive, pray, speak kindly, refuse revenge, or take a healthy step toward healing. Small acts of obedience are ways of walking in the life Christ has given you.
3: Anchor Your Hope Beyond Today
When you face fear, grief, illness, or uncertainty, remember that your story does not end with loss or death. Thank Jesus for the promise of new life, and let that hope give you courage to live faithfully in the present.

You are not trapped inside your past. The moment you were united with Christ, His love and sacrifice broke the chains and brought you new life. Keep turning toward Him, keep choosing the next faithful step, and trust that the risen Jesus is able to make you new.
