A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. - John 13:34 NIV
Jesus spoke these words on the night before His crucifixion, after washing His disciples’ feet. He, our Lord and Savior, took the posture of a servant and gave His disciples a living picture of the love He was commanding them to give to one another. His love was not merely a feeling or a kind intention.
The love Jesus demonstrated was humble, practical, patient, sacrificial, and willing to serve. The command was “new” not because loving others had never been taught before, but because Jesus gave His own love as the pattern for us to follow:
“As I have loved you.” We are called to receive His love and then extend that same Christlike love to one another.
What Christlike Love Looks Like
Loving one another does not require perfect relationships or constant agreement. It means choosing actions that seek one another person’s good, even when it costs you something.
It may look like:
Listening carefully instead of listening to respond.
Serving quietly without needing praise.
Forgiving instead of holding onto resentment.
Speaking truth with gentleness rather than using truth as a weapon.
Accepting those who are different from us.
Jesus’ love is both gracious and truthful. It does not excuse sin or ignore harmful behavior, but it refuses to treat people as disposable. Love can be patient and compassionate while still being honest, discerning, and within appropriate boundaries.
Love Is Our Witness
Jesus immediately adds that the world will recognize His disciples by their love for one another. People may hear our beliefs, observe our worship, or notice our service, but the way we treat one another gives visible evidence of whether the love of Jesus is shaping our hearts.
This makes everyday relationships deeply meaningful. The way you speak to family, respond to a difficult coworker, welcome someone who feels left out, or care for a struggling friend can reflect the love of Jesus more clearly than impressive words ever could.
You cannot live this command by willpower alone. The same Jesus who commands love is the One who has first loved you. When you remember His patience with you, His forgiveness toward you, and His service for you, your heart becomes freer to show that loving grace to others.
Three Practical Ways To Walk Out This Word
1: Serve Someone Quietly
Choose one practical act of service today without announcing it or expecting recognition. Help with a task, make a meal, offer a ride, encourage someone, take care of an overlooked responsibility, or give your focused attention to someone who needs it.
2: Choose Love In A Difficult Moment
When you feel irritated, offended, or tempted to withdraw, pause and ask: “How has Jesus loved me in my weakness?” Then choose one response that reflects His character: listen, speak gently, forgive a minor offense, pray before replying, or communicate a truthful boundary with respect.
3: Strengthen Christian Community
Reach out to a fellow believer who may be discouraged, isolated, grieving, or under pressure. Send a specific message, ask how you can pray, and follow through. Christlike love becomes visible through consistent care, not only occasional words.
Closing Encouragement
Jesus does not call you merely to admire His love; He calls you to live from it and share it. As you receive His mercy daily, He can form in you a love that serves humbly, speaks truthfully, forgives generously, and remains faithful. Through that love, people can see the reality of Christ at work in you.
