Today's Scripture
"This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters." — 1 John 3:16 (NIV)
Love is not just a feeling—it’s an active choice and a reflection of our heart posture. 1 John 3:16 shows us that true love is sacrificial, as demonstrated by Jesus, who willingly laid down His life for us. His love wasn’t passive or conditional; it was a deliberate act of grace and forgiveness. Because of His sacrifice, we are called to love others in the same way, extending grace even when it’s difficult.
Loving like Christ requires us to lay down our personal pain, betrayal, and desires for vengeance. Ephesians 4:32 reminds us, “Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.” Forgiveness is a cornerstone of Christlike love. It doesn’t ignore the hurt but chooses to release it, trusting God to bring healing and justice.
Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross is the ultimate example of love and forgiveness. Romans 5:8 proclaims, “But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” If Jesus could extend grace to us in our brokenness, we are empowered to do the same for others, even when it feels undeserved.
Love also involves laying aside selfishness to serve others. Philippians 2:3-4 encourages us, “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.” Loving actively means prioritizing others’ needs and being a vessel of God’s love.
Three Practical Ways to Walk This Out Today:
Forgive Someone Who Has Hurt You: Take time to pray for someone who has wronged you. Ask God for the strength to release the pain and extend forgiveness, just as He has forgiven you.
Perform an Act of Sacrificial Love: Look for a way to help someone today, even if it requires you to give up time, resources, or comfort. Let your actions reflect Christ’s selfless love.
Speak Life and Grace: Be intentional with your words, offering encouragement or affirmation to someone who may be struggling. Choose kindness over criticism and love over bitterness.
As you embrace the love of Christ in your heart, let it flow outward through your actions, forgiving freely and loving sacrificially. In doing so, you reflect His grace and become a living example of His transformative love.
