Scripture For Today
Whoever claims to live in him must live as Jesus did. - 1 John 2:6 NIV
To say that we live in Christ is to make more than a statement of belief; it is to embrace a way of life. John makes that connection clear by tying our claim directly to our conduct. If we say we belong to Jesus, then our lives should increasingly reflect His heart, His priorities, and His ways. This is not a call to perform for God, but a call to walk closely enough with Him that His life begins to shape ours.
“Live as Jesus did” can feel weighty at first, because Jesus is perfect and we are not. Yet this verse is not meant to crush us; it is meant to guide us. It calls us away from a faith that is only spoken and toward a faith that is practiced. Jesus lived in obedience to the Father, in compassion toward people, in humility, purity, truth, and love. As we abide in Him, those same qualities begin to grow in us day by day.
John’s words also remind us that the Christian life is visible. What we believe inwardly will show itself outwardly over time. Jesus did not merely teach love; He loved. He did not only speak truth; He embodied it. He did not avoid difficult people, interruptions, or sacrifice. He walked in holiness and mercy at the same time. To live as Jesus did means allowing His example to influence our worship moments, conversations, reactions, decisions, and private choices.
This kind of life begins with abiding. We cannot imitate Jesus by sheer effort alone. We need His Spirit to form His character in us. The verse uses the language of living in Him, or abiding in Him, which points to relationship before behavior. The more closely we remain in Christ, the more His life becomes the source of ours. Obedience then becomes less about image management and more about inward transformation.
Living as Jesus did also means embracing both love and surrender. Jesus was gentle, but never compromising. He was bold, but never harsh for selfish reasons. He served, forgave, withdrew to pray, welcomed the overlooked, and stayed faithful when obedience was costly.
Following Him means asking in ordinary moments, “What would reflect Jesus here?” Sometimes that will mean patience. Sometimes it will mean truthfulness. Sometimes it will mean quiet humility when no one notices. If you feel aware of the gap between your life and His example, do not respond with despair.
Let that awareness become an invitation to remain closer to Him. The goal is not instant perfection. The goal is real formation over time. Jesus is not only the standard; He is also the strength by which we grow. As you stay near Him, He will continue shaping your heart, your habits, and your responses so that your life bears His resemblance more clearly.
Three Practical Ways To Walk Out This Word Daily
1. Start With One Jesus-Like Choice
Choose one area today where you want to intentionally reflect Jesus, perhaps in patience, honesty, compassion, or humility. Ask God to help you respond in that area the way Christ would. Growth often becomes real through one faithful choice at a time.
2. Stay Close Before You Act
Before rushing into your day, spend a few quiet moments with the Lord in prayer or Scripture. Living like Jesus starts with living near Jesus. Abiding keeps your heart anchored so your actions can flow from His presence instead of pressure.
3. Let His Example Shape Your Responses
When tension rises, pause and ask, “What would reflect Jesus in this moment?” That question can slow your reaction and make room for grace, truth, and self-control. Over time, those pauses become places where Christ forms His character in you.
Closing Empowerment
1 John 2:6 is both a challenge and an invitation: if we claim to live in Christ, our lives should increasingly look like His. The good news is that Jesus never calls you to this kind of life without also giving you His presence and power. As you abide in Him today, trust that He is able to make your life more and more like His, one surrendered step at a time.
