Keeping Your Mind Set on Things Above
Colossians 3:1-2 (NIV): "Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things."
Life is full of distractions. From daily responsibilities to unexpected challenges, it's easy to get caught up in the noise of life and lose sight of what truly matters. However, God calls us to focus our hearts and minds on things above—on His truth, His promises, and His eternal kingdom.
Don’t Get Distracted by the Noise of Life
The world constantly demands our attention, pulling us in different directions with worries, busyness, and temptations. But Scripture reminds us that these temporary things should not define our focus. Matthew 6:33 encourages us: "But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well."
When we prioritize God above all else, we align ourselves with His peace and purpose. Earthly concerns may still exist, but they no longer control our hearts or steal our joy.
Focus Your Mind on Things Above
Setting our minds on things above means intentionally dwelling on God’s truth rather than the distractions around us. Romans 12:2 says: "Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will."
When we consistently renew our minds with Scripture, prayer, and worship, we gain a heavenly perspective. Instead of being overwhelmed by life’s troubles, we walk in confidence, knowing God is in control.
God’s Promise of Perfect Peace
God doesn’t just command us to focus on Him—He also promises to sustain us when we do. Isaiah 26:3 declares: "You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you."
When we trust God and keep our minds fixed on Him, He provides a peace that the world cannot take away. This peace is not dependent on our circumstances but on His unwavering presence in our lives.
Three Practical Ways to Stay Focused on God Daily
Start and End Your Day with God – Begin and end each day with Scripture and prayer. This helps center your thoughts on Him before distractions take over. Psalm 119:15 says: "I meditate on your precepts and consider your ways."
Filter What You Consume – Be intentional about what you allow into your mind. Reduce distractions by limiting negative media, unnecessary worries, or anything that pulls your heart away from God’s peace. Philippians 4:8 reminds us: "Whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure... think about such things."
Practice Gratitude and Worship – When life feels overwhelming, shift your focus by thanking God for His goodness. Worship brings your mind back to His presence and fills you with joy. Psalm 100:4 says: "Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise."
When we set our hearts and minds on things above, we experience clarity, peace, and purpose. Keep looking up—God is guiding you every step of the way!
