Scripture For Today
“And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them.” - 1 John 4:16 NIV
God’s love is not a vague idea or a reward you must earn through perfect behavior. In 1 John 4, love is rooted in God’s action: He loved first, sent His Son as Savior, and gives His Spirit to His people. The invitation is to know that love and to rely on it, to place your confidence in God’s character even when your feelings, circumstances, or past experiences make love difficult to trust.
There may be days when you feel unworthy, forgotten, disappointed, or afraid that you have failed too much for God to remain near. This verse speaks directly to those fears. God’s love does not begin with your performance. His love is part of who He is. You do not have to manufacture your way into His care; you can receive it, rest in it, and allow it to reshape how you see yourself and others.
To “live in love” does not mean you will never struggle, become frustrated, or need forgiveness. It means you make your home in the love of God. You keep returning to Him. You let His love correct your fears, soften your bitterness, guide your choices, and become visible in your relationships. The passage connects abiding in God with continuing in love for others, not as a way to earn His presence, but as the fruit of knowing that He is already at work within you.
Let Love Lead
God’s love is not weak or passive. It is truthful, holy, merciful, patient, and self-giving. Love may mean offering grace, but it can also mean speaking truth respectfully, asking forgiveness, setting a healthy boundary, refusing to gossip, or showing care where it would be easier to withdraw.
When you rely on God’s love, you do not have to spend your life trying to secure approval from people. You can love without controlling the outcome. You can be kind without becoming a doormat. You can forgive without denying harm. You can serve without needing recognition. God’s secure love gives you the freedom to live from acceptance rather than constantly striving for it.
The next verses say that mature love drives out fear, especially the fear tied to punishment and rejection. When fear rises, you can remind your heart: “God knows me fully, and I can rely on His love today.”
Three Practical Ways To Walk Out This Word
1: Receive God’s Love Daily
Begin with a simple prayer: “Father, help me know and rely on Your love today.” Sit quietly for a moment, not trying to earn God’s attention, but receiving His presence. When self-condemning thoughts arise, answer them with the truth that God’s love is rooted in His character, not your perfect performance.
2: Let Love Shape One Response
Before a difficult conversation, message, or decision, ask: “What would a truthful and loving response look like?” It might mean listening rather than assuming, speaking calmly instead of reacting, apologizing, offering help, or setting a clear boundary with respect.
3: Give Love A Practical Form
Choose one concrete expression of care today. Encourage someone specifically, check on a person who may be isolated, forgive a small offense, offer practical help, or pray for someone who is difficult to love. Let God’s love move from an idea into an action.
Closing Encouragement
You are not asked to carry love in your own strength. You are invited to live in the God who is love. As you come to know and rely on His care, His presence can steady your heart and make His love visible through your words, choices, and relationships.
