Scripture For Today
What, then, shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? - Romans 8:31 NIV
Paul writes these words after describing God’s great work of salvation, how He foreknew, called, justified, and will ultimately glorify His people. In light of all that God has done, Paul asks, “What, then, shall we say?” His answer is not a complicated argument, but a powerful truth for the heart:
If God is for us, who can be against us?
This does not mean we will never face opposition, but it means no opposition can ultimately defeat what God has purposed for those who belong to Him. To say that God is for us is to anchor your life in His favor, not in your performance or in the opinions of others. His “for you” was written at the cross, where Jesus gave His life so that nothing could separate you from His love.
When shame, fear, or accusation speak loudly, this verse answers them with a greater voice. You are not standing alone, trying to hold your life together by sheer effort. You are held by a God who has already moved heaven and earth to bring you to Himself.
None of the enemies and obstacles you face are greater than God’s presence and purpose. People may misunderstand you. Circumstances may press hard. The enemy may whisper lies. Yet none of these can overturn the verdict that God has already spoken over you in Christ. In the courtroom of heaven, the highest authority has declared you loved, forgiven, and His.
This truth invites you to live with a different kind of confidence. You do not have to be ruled by the fear of what others might do, say, or think. You do not have to measure your security by how well things are going today. When God is for you, your foundation is deeper than shifting emotions or changing seasons. Even in weakness, you stand in the strength of His faithful love.
If you feel surrounded by pressures, by decisions, or by inner battles, let this verse speak into that place. God is not distant from your struggle. The one who is for you also walks with you. He sees the opposition you face, both seen and unseen, and He is not intimidated by any of it. His presence does not always remove the battle, but it assures you that the battle will not have the final word.
Three Practical Ways To Walk Out This Word Daily
1. Answer Fear With Truth
When anxious thoughts rise, quietly speak this verse to your heart: “God is for me in Christ.” Let that be your response to the “what ifs.” Over time, your mind learns to turn back to His truth instead of spiraling in fear.
2. Pray From Security, Not Desperation
Bring your needs to God, believing He is already for you, not trying to convince Him to care. Pray as a loved child, not as someone begging for attention. This changes the tone of your prayers from panic to trust.
3. Reframe Opposition In Light Of God
When you encounter resistance, pause and remember that no person or circumstance can overrule God’s purpose for your life. Ask, “Lord, how are You with me in this?” This helps you see challenges as places where His faithfulness can be revealed.
Closing Encouragement
Jesus has already given the clearest answer to Romans 8:31: the cross and the empty tomb declare forever that God is for you. As you walk through today, keep that reality close. You are not alone, you are not forgotten, and you are not unprotected—the God who is for you goes with you into every moment you face.
