Scripture For Today
“A generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed.” - Proverbs 11:25 NIV
God’s generosity is not limited to money. A generous life can offer time, attention, encouragement, patience, wisdom, skills, and resources. Proverbs 11:25 paints a picture of someone whose heart is open. A person who becomes a source of blessing rather than someone who tightly holds everything for themselves.
The verse’s image is like giving water to a thirsty person on dry land: the one who refreshes others is also refreshed. When you make room to care for someone else, God often brings renewal through the joy of serving, deeper relationships, unexpected support, gratitude, and the awareness that your life has made a meaningful difference.
What “Prosper” Means
This is not a promise that every generous act will lead to immediate financial wealth or that you can give in order to make God owe you more. Generosity is not a transaction with God. Proverbs teaches that an open-handed life leads to a fuller kind of flourishing: spiritual, relational, emotional, and sometimes material, while the exact form and timing of God’s provision remains in His hands.
Giving can be costly. You may feel as though you have little energy, time, money, or emotional capacity to spare. God does not ask you to ignore wise boundaries, neglect your responsibilities, or give beyond what you can genuinely offer. Instead, He calls you to be available and faithful with what you have in your hands right now.
Sometimes the most refreshing gift is not large or public. It may be a thoughtful text, a meal, a listening ear, a ride, a sincere prayer, help with a task, or a word of encouragement at precisely the right moment. Whether physical or spiritual, the generosity you sow into others will always find its way back to you.
Three Practical Ways To Walk Out This Word
1: Refresh One Person Intentionally
Ask God to bring someone to mind who may be tired, discouraged, lonely, grieving, or under pressure. Contact them today. Be specific: “I was thinking about you. How are you really doing?” Then make room to listen without rushing to give advice.
2: Give From What You Have
Choose one resource you can share this week: your time, a skill, a meal, transportation, a helpful connection, money, a practical item, or a prayer. Do not wait until you feel you have an abundance. Faithful generosity begins with stewardship of what is already in your hands.
3: Give Without Keeping Score
Offer kindness without expecting a return, recognition, or control over how it is received. Give as a response to God’s grace, not as a strategy for gaining approval or reward. Then trust God to care for you in the ways He knows you need.
Closing Encouragement
You do not need unlimited resources to become a source of refreshment. God can use your willingness, your presence, and what you have in hand to bring hope to another person. As you live with an open heart and wise generosity, you participate in God’s care for others and discover that He is also faithful to refresh you.
