Scripture For Today
“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal.” - Matthew 6:19 NIV
Jesus is not saying that possessions, work, saving, preparation, or responsible stewardship are wrong. He is warning against building your life around things that cannot last. Money can be lost, homes and belongings can decay, plans can change, and recognition can fade. Earthly treasures are temporary and cannot provide permanent security for the soul.
The question this verse asks is not simply, “What do you own?” It is, “What owns your heart?” Jesus immediately continues, “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” What you most value will shape your attention, decisions, worries, goals, and use of time.
Treasures That Last
Jesus contrasts temporary treasure with treasure in heaven. Treasures that cannot be destroyed, stolen, or lost. Storing up treasure in heaven means living in a way that honors God and carries eternal value:
Loving God above comfort, status, and possessions.
Serving people with humility and compassion.
Giving generously to meet genuine needs.
Practicing integrity when compromise would benefit you.
Investing in faith, character, prayer, and God’s kingdom.
Using money and resources as tools for good rather than as the source of your identity or safety.
This is not a command to reject every material blessing. It is an invitation to hold blessings with open hands. You can enjoy what God provides while refusing to make it your master. Jesus later makes the issue even clearer: no one can serve both God and money.
Three Practical Ways To Walk Out This Word
1: Examine What Has Your Heart
Ask yourself: “What loss am I most afraid of? What do I spend most of my energy trying to gain, protect, or prove?” Bring your answer honestly to God. Ask Him to show you whether a temporary thing has begun to receive the trust and devotion that belong to Him.
2: Practice Open-Handed Stewardship
Choose one way to use an earthly resource for an eternal purpose this week. You might give to someone in need, support a ministry, share a meal, offer your time or skill, encourage a discouraged person, or use a connection to help someone find an opportunity.
3: Invest In What Cannot Be Taken
Set aside time today for something that strengthens your relationship with God: Scripture, prayer, worship, confession, serving, or meaningful fellowship. These choices may not always look impressive, but they form character and deepen a life that lasts beyond circumstances.

You do not have to live anxiously trying to secure yourself through things that can disappear. God sees your needs and invites you to build your life around what lasts: faith, love, obedience, generosity, and relationship with Him. As you place your treasure in God’s hands, He can free your heart from fear and teach you to live with lasting purpose.
