Scripture For Today
“I thank my God every time I remember you.” - Philippians 1:3 NIV
Paul opens his letter to the Philippians with gratitude. When these believers come to mind, his first response is not criticism, frustration, or a list of what could be better. He thanks God for them.
There is something powerful about recognizing the people God has placed in your life as gifts.
It is easy to become so familiar with someone that you stop noticing what they bring into your world. The friend who checks on you, the family member who keeps showing up, the person who prays for you, the mentor who encouraged you, or the coworker whose presence makes difficult days easier can quietly become part of the background of everyday life.
Gratitude brings them back into focus.
Not every meaningful relationship is perfect. People can bless you and still have flaws. You can love someone deeply and still experience moments of disagreement or disappointment. Gratitude does not require pretending those realities do not exist. It simply chooses to recognize the goodness God has allowed you to experience through another person.
There may also be people you no longer see regularly whose influence remains with you. A conversation may have changed the way you think. Someone’s generosity may have helped you through a difficult season. A person’s faith may have strengthened yours without them ever realizing it.
Paul did more than feel grateful. His gratitude became prayer. Remembering people became an opportunity to thank God for them.
Today, consider the people whose presence has made your life richer. Do not assume they already know what they mean to you. Reach out to someone you haven’t called in a while. Call the family member who crosses your mind. Take the time to verbally tell your loved ones how important they are to you.
The world is moving a mile a minute, and the news is getting more bleak each day. Your call out of the blue could be the blessing someone has been praying for, and your intentional demonstrations of care can be a balm to someone’s soul. In a world that is more isolated than ever, sharing your love and care can make all the difference.
Three Practical Ways To Walk Out This Word
1: Think Of Someone You Are Grateful For
Ask God to bring one person to mind who has encouraged, supported, taught, loved, or helped you. Spend a moment remembering something specific they have contributed to your life and thank God for them. This will help you to step into gratitude and positive thoughts the moment you take this action.
2: Tell Them While You Have The Opportunity
Send a message, make a call, write a note, or tell them personally what you appreciate. Be specific. Instead of simply saying, “Thank you for everything,” tell them what they did and why it mattered to you. This heartfelt and intentional act of gratitude may be a blessing to you both.
3: Turn Your Gratitude Into Prayer
Pray for the people you appreciate. Ask God to strengthen them, encourage them, provide for them, and bless the areas of their lives you may never fully see. Let gratitude move beyond appreciation into intentional prayer.
Closing Encouragement
Some of God’s greatest gifts arrive in the form of people. Take time to notice who has walked beside you, encouraged you, prayed for you, taught you, or simply made life a little lighter by being present. Their impact may be greater than they realize. There’s no need to wait for a special occasion to express gratitude. Thank God for them today, and whenever possible, let them know that their presence in your life has mattered.
