Scripture For Today
“Then Jesus said, ‘Whoever has ears to hear, let them hear.’” - Mark 4:9 NIV
Jesus says these words after sharing the parable of the sower, a story about seed falling on different kinds of soil. The seed was the same, but the condition of the soil determined what happened after the seed was sown. The soil in the parable represented the state of the hearts hearing the word (the seed) of our Father.
Today’s cornerstone scripture is an invitation to do more than simply hear sound. The scripture encourages the listener to hear with an open heart, intention, and deep consideration.
It is possible to hear a message from God and fail to receive that message in our hearts. You can read scripture, listen to a message, receive wise counsel, or sense conviction in your heart while experiencing no significant change. The culprit is the stony ground of the heart as described in Mark 4.
The busyness of the world causes us to hear, while failing to take the time to process and receive in our hearts what the Lord is revealing. Hearing becomes meaningful only when you create space for what you hear to be integrated into the good ground of an open heart.
Sometimes the challenge is not that God has been silent. It is that life has become loud. Busyness, opinions, worry, distraction, and the constant flow of information can make it difficult to recognize what deserves your attention.
This is why listening often requires intentional stillness and silence. You may need to slow down long enough to notice what God has been repeating, highlighting, or gently bringing back to your mind.
Listening also requires humility. There may be moments when what you hear challenges your assumptions, corrects your behavior, or asks you to change direction. A receptive heart does not only listen for what is comforting. It remains open to truth that leads to growth.
You do not need God to tell you everything at once. Sometimes you simply need to hear clearly what He is saying about the very next step.
Three Practical Ways To Walk Out This Word
1: Create A Few Minutes Of Quiet
Step away from unnecessary noise and distraction for a few minutes today. Put down your phone, become still, and ask, “Lord, what have You been trying to show me?” Give yourself enough space to listen without immediately filling the silence.
2: Pay Attention To What Keeps Returning
Notice whether a Scripture, conviction, idea, or area of your life has repeatedly come to mind. Instead of dismissing it, pray about it. Ask God whether there is something He wants you to understand, address, or act on.
3: Respond To What You Already Know
Think about something God has already made clear. Take one practical step of obedience today. Listening becomes fruitful when what you hear begins to shape how you live.
Closing Encouragement
God’s voice does not always compete with the loudest thing around you. Sometimes His direction comes quietly through Scripture, conviction, wisdom, or a truth He keeps bringing back to your attention. Give yourself permission to slow down enough to notice. Keep your heart open, your spirit teachable, and your ears attentive. You may discover that the guidance you have been asking for is already beginning to take root.
